The AKC awards three basic obedience titles: Companion Dog (the beginning title), Companion Dog Excellent and Utility Dog. These titles are awarded based on the handler and dog completing various exercises and obtaining a minimun qualifying score on each exercise. By the time you have completed an "advanced" training class, you have been exposed to all the requirenents needed to obtain the basic Companion Dog title.

To earn an AKC title on your dog you must receive a qualifying score at three separate AKC sanctioned trials or shows. A different judge must award each qualifying score. A qualifying score at one trial or show is called a "leg". Therefore, when you receive three "legs", your dog has qualified for a particular title.

Qualifying Score

A qualifying score is 170 out of a possible 200 points. Additionally, you must receive at least 50% of the possible score for each exercise.

CD (Companion Dog Title)
Exercises and Scores.

Novice
Novice A Class. The Novice A Class shall be for dogs not less than six months of age that have not won the title CD. A handler must own the dog entered, or be a member of the owner's household or immediate family and may not have previously handled any other dog that has earned an American Kennel Club Obedience title.

Novice B Class. The Novice B Class shall be for dogs not less than six months of age that have not won the title CD. Dogs in this class may be handled by the owner or any other person.

Heel on Leash and Figure Eight - 40 points
Stand for Examination - 30 points
Heel Free - 40 points
Recall - 30 points
Long Sit - 30 points
Long Down - 30 points
Maximum Total Score 200 points

Novice "A" lessons
Novice

Open
Open A Class. The Open A Class shall be for dogs that have won the CD title but have not won the title CDX. Obedience Judges or persons who have trained, or exhibited a dog that has earned an OTCH may not enter or handle dogs in this class.

Open B Class. The Open B class will be for dogs that have won the title CD or CDX. A dog may continue to compete in this class after it has won the title UD.

Types of Competition

FUN (CORRECTION) MATCH - A qualifying score at these matches does not count towards an AKC title. Handlers use these matches to help prepare their dogs for AKC sanctioned Trials or Shows. Handlers are allowed to give corrections to their dogs at these matches.

SANCTIONED MATCH - An AKC sanctioned event conducted under the sane rules as a Show or Trial. You can not correct your dog. A qualifying score at a match does not count towards an AKC title.

OBEDIENCE TRIAL OR SHOW - An AKC sanctioned event. A qualifying score at a Trial or Show counts as one of the three legs required to be awarded a title.
